School's (almost) out for summer!

Okay, I realize I am not the best blogger! I forget sometimes that I have this. This week has been pretty stressful, I am sure for everybody. I had a lot of things to turn in this week in my class, which was pretty nerve-wracking since I haven't turned in homework since 2001. I learned that APA format is a little different then it was back then, for example, I had no idea what "a running head" even was, as my pocket style manual is apparently out of date!

Now we jump into the work part of the week. It is a hard week because the second year students are all done at Kirkwood, and this includes one of our amazing workstudy students in the Student Life Office, Nicole. Nicole and Amy kind of go hand-in-hand. They are both amazing and Nicole will be truly missed, and Amy won't even look the same without our Little Nicole in tow. I am very excited as Nicole is going to Upper Iowa, and that is the territory in which I travel to recruit students, so now instead of driving to West Union to pick up a Subway sandwich, Nicole will have to tell me the new "hot spot" and join me for lunch when I do my school visits! Nicole (sorry I have to brag for her) was awarded an Outstanding Student award this week. We are so very proud of her, as she has worked so hard for this honor, and I felt really big that I got to see her get her award...however, I am dreading seeing her walk across the stage to get her diploma!

A few of the Student Ambassador officers (Lindsey, Caitlin, and Nick) and second year's (too many to mention) are all leaving as well, which is hard every year! We get to see their smiling faces every Friday, and we actually get excited when they first walk through the door! It is hard to be excited for these student's when you are sad at the void that they will be leaving. Since I have started at Kirkwood, every year I say, "next year I am not going to get as attached", but somehow I always do, and somehow this year still seems harder than the rest!

Busy week ahead!

As I sit here on Sunday night, I look to the busy week ahead. This includes individual appointments with students, some of whom I have previously had appts. with, as well as some high school visits. This is an exciting time for seniors to tie their loose ends together and make sure they are on track. This is also an important time for juniors to start doing visits and to start thinking about their senior year.

As a student myself, it sheds new light on the importance of my job. It is so exciting to visit the school that you could possibly end up going to, and the first person that you meet can play a huge role in this process. As an Admissions Advisor, I am sometimes the first person a student comes across when they come to Kirkwood Community College. I always hope to have that welcoming smile and the organized office, but in this busy world, that isn't always the case. I have days when I am rushed out the door and halfway to work, I realize I left my lunch sitting on the counter.
